Judgement Free Zone: Here's what to do if you've fallen behind on your bookkeeping
You're not the only one
If it's any condolence, this happens more than you'd expect. Many business owners fall behind on their bookkeeping, not because they're lazy or doing something wrong but because they've got a thousand other things that is begging for their attention. Between serving clients, keeping up with admin, marketing, dealing with employees and trying to hold everything together, it’s easy for the books to fall to the bottom of the list.
So if you’re staring at a pile of invoices or avoiding your accounting software, just know this is kind of normal (BUT that doesn't mean you should leave it that way).
There is a way out...
Step 1: Breathe
Seriously. Whether it's a few months or more than a year, it doesn't mean you're too far gone. Everything can eventually be fixed up. What matters is that you're reading this now and ready to deal with it.
Step 2: Work out how far behind you are
Are you missing a quarter or a full financial year? Either way, start by checking your software or records and get a sense of what’s missing.
Tip: Don’t try to do it all in one sitting. This step is just about figuring out the gaps.
Step 3: Decide if you want to do it yourself or hand it over
There’s no right answer here. If you feel confident and have the time, you can chip away at it yourself. If not, you can get help to catch up quickly and properly.
Sometimes the best move is getting support so you can focus on the rest of your business without the stress.
Step 4: Sort what’s urgent first
If you’re registered for GST, your BAS lodgements are the top priority. Even if the rest of your records are still messy, getting your BAS caught up will help you avoid penalties and stay in the ATO’s good books. Do this my making sure all your invoices to clients have been entered and just as importantly, all the purchases you've made which have GST on them are also recorded in the system. Whether they've been paid or not will also be important if you are set up on a cash basis so double check with your accountant/BAS agent if you're not sure.
Step 5: Make a simple catch-up plan
Pick something achievable, like:
Reconciling one month each week
Blocking out 30 minutes a day
Booking a clean-up session with a bookkeeper
This doesn’t need to be done overnight. Progress is what matters.
Step 6: You can ask for help
There’s nothing wrong with needing support. Plenty of business owners feel overwhelmed by their books, especially after things pile up.
You’re not bad at business just because your bookkeeping got messy. You’re human, and this happens to more people than you realise. What matters is that you’re taking the next step now.
If this post helped you feel a little lighter, share it with a fellow business owner who might be in the same spot. No shame here.
